Though deserving of some time spent away from his duties, Derek tends to the woods of Petalburg by scouting them for signs of anything abnormal. The splintering layers of however many realities he'd seen, and the resurrection of pokemon once dead caused a pit of worry to begin gouging at his core. So whether it be signs of some thing or even just pokemon that didn't appear like they should be here, Derek sought them out with Jonesy at his side. Or his shoulder, to be more specific.

Although there was another motive for coming into these woods. Derek's gym needed a holiday tree, and with such an abundance of them in the woods..

It would come as no surprise for those who ventured inside Petalburg gym to see Derek's Machamp, Randal, decorating the tree with POKEBALLS and a faux replica of his Starmie, Euryhale, as the crowning jewel upon the evergreen. They were give instructions, but Derek wasn't allowed to see it until they were done.

From bunches of dying primrose (primula) flowers, the wild Volbeat flies out to confront the duo it was unhappy to see in it's neck of the woods. Reluctant to pay it much mind, Derek makes a vague motion towards it as he continues walking.

Sending out a WATER PULSE, the bug type pokemon is quickly sent into a spiraling confusion that takes over any hostile thoughts and sends it into a frenzied stupor before crashing back into the flora it came from.

Resembling the act of SNOWBOARDING on a miniature scale, the Scatterbug slides out in front of Derek in order to confront him for encroaching on it's turf. Smiling, the gym leader can't help but shake his head as he ignores the thing and continues moving through. At first it seems even more irritated, but soon enough the Scatterbug realizes that this is essentially what it wanted. For Derek to leave it and it's home alone.

As if a PRESENT dropped down from the sky, a wild Jumpluff comes bouncing around Derek as he and his pokemon continue their search. It's refreshing to see pokemon from his home region of Johto, even if it's one he's allergic to...

He can only make a small wave before finding himself in a sneezing fit. From there it was a quick decision to release one of his flying pokemon and head back to town. All to avoid it's cute cotton spores that were now seeding every square foot of Petalburg woods.
